A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of an individual’s thinking skills, using a set of standardized tests and procedures. A neuropsychological evaluation typically Includes:
Performance-based tests of intellectual functioning, attention, learning and memory, processing speed, reasoning and problem-solving, visuospatial skills, executive functioning skills, fine motor skills, and language skills.
Standardized questionnaires /rating scales are also typically completed by the client, parent/legal guardian, and/or teachers.
Depending on the presenting concerns, academic skills may also be evaluated.
The results of a neuropsychological evaluation can be used to help identify an individual’s neurocognitive strengths and weaknesses, document and/or clarify a diagnosis, and provide targeted recommendations for intervention, specialized services, and/or academic accommodations to optimize their full potential in school, work, and everyday life.
If you or your child received an evaluation in the past, an updated evaluation can also be beneficial by tracking changes in neurocognitive functioning over time.
For college age students, a neuropsychological evaluation is often required by colleges and universities in order to provide formal documentation of a disorder or diagnosis (e.g., ADHD/ADD, Dyslexia or other Learning Disability) and receive academic accommodations at the college level.
